BEIJING, May 20: Russia and China condemn initiatives involving the blocking, freezing or seizure of assets and property of foreign states, according to a joint statement released on Wednesday.
“The parties condemn initiatives related to the blocking, freezing or seizure of the assets and property of foreign states and emphasize their right to take retaliatory measures in accordance with international legal norms,” the statement on the further strengthening of the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China read.
Russia and China also called for the abolition of unlawful unilateral coercive measures that undermine international law and the purposes of the UN Charter, according to the statement.
“The parties advocate that all states respect the purposes and principles of the UN Charter in their entirety, fullness, and interconnection, uphold respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, and oppose actions that harm the fundamental interests of other states, especially in the field of security,” the statement read.
The document also emphasized the intention of the two nations to “resolve differences peacefully through dialogue and consultations based on equality and indivisible security, eliminate the root causes of conflicts, and improve the system of global governance and regulation of international relations.”
Russia and China firmly oppose the use of unilateral sanctions, secondary restrictions and other restrictive trade practices, the statement added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on May 19 for an official visit. On Wednesday, talks between the Russian president and Chinese President Xi Jinping were held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. (UNI)
