JAMMU, May 17: Emphasizing the importance of preventive healthcare and healthy living, Dr Sushil Sharma (HoD, Cardiology, GMC Jammu) said today that hypertension can be effectively controlled through lifestyle changes, regular monitoring and timely treatment.
Dr Sharma was speaking during a day-long cardiac awareness and health check-up camp organized at Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha, General Vikram Singh Nagar, Gadigarh, Jammu, in connection with World Hypertension Day. The camp aimed to spread awareness about the growing incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
Describing hypertension as a “silent killer”, Dr Sharma said the disease often develops without visible symptoms while continuously damaging vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes and blood vessels. He warned that many individuals remain unaware of their condition until severe complications like stroke, heart attack, kidney failure or vision impairment occur.
He highlighted excessive salt intake, obesity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, mental stress, inadequate sleep, sedentary habits and dependence on processed food as major causes behind rising hypertension cases.
Dr Sharma advised people to maintain balanced diets rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, minimize salt and fatty foods, exercise regularly, control weight, manage stress and avoid smoking and alcohol to maintain cardiovascular health.
The camp concluded with an interactive session on blood pressure management, heart disease prevention and healthy living practices.
The management committee of Gurudwara Singh Sabha, including Harbans Singh, Balbir Singh, Tirth Singh, Avinash Singh, Daljit Singh and Parwinder Singh, were present on the occasion.
