UDHAMPUR, May 13: District Congress Committee President Sumeet Magotra today expressed serious concern over deteriorating drainage condition of the Udhampur city despite an expenditure of Rs 186 crore on the Devika Project.
“Broken manholes and damaged roads in various parts of the city continue to cause inconvenience to the public while in several areas, dirty water is even entering people’s homes, creating major hardships for residents,” he said, while addressing a press conference, here today.
Magotra demanded answers from the local MP and MLA, asking them to explain where the funds allocated in the name of the Devika Project had actually been utilized. “Public wants development, but the BJP remains occupied with mere statements and poor politics,’ he said, adding that addressing the city’s basic civic issues is the responsibility of elected representatives, and the people are now demanding accountability.
Magotra said that the general public has continuously been demanding an inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the project. He expressed surprise over the MLA’s statement claiming that all work under the Rs 186 crore project was carried out according to standards, while challenging people to “bring proof” of any scam. Magotra termed this statement “laughable” and said that instead of reacting angrily to demands for an investigation, the MLA should assure the public that a fair probe would be conducted so that the truth can come out clearly.
