SRINAGAR, Apr 21: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Jammu and Kashmir has filed a charge sheet against a former Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of the PWD (R&B) Division Sopore in a bribery case.
According to the officials, the challan was presented before the Special Judge Anti-Corruption Baramulla Court against Mubarak Ahmad Ganai for allegedly demanding and accepting illegal gratification from a contractor.
The case stemmed from a complaint by a contractor who accused the officer of demanding a 2 percent bribe to process a pending bill of Rs 28.27 lakh related to the construction of a classroom lecture block at Government Degree College Sopore. A discreet verification conducted by the agency substantiated the allegations, following which a formal case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 was registered.
On October 16, 2024, the AEE was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting Rs 25,000 as bribe from the complainant. The tainted money was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses during a trap operation.
Investigations revealed that the accused had deliberately withheld the contractor’s bill, leveraging his official position to extract illegal gratification. After completion of the probe, prosecution sanction was obtained from the competent authority.
The case has now been taken cognizance of by the court, with the next hearing scheduled for June 6, 2026.
