SHIMLA, Apr 16 : Elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would not be held on a party basis, and anybody can contest elections for Pradhan and Block Development Committee (BDC), said Himachal Pradesh chief minister on Thursday.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that, in addition to the women’s reservation bill, this matter would also come up for discussion in the political affairs meeting.
He added that a new internal organisation of Congress has been constituted, and a meeting of the political affairs committee, working committee and district presidents is also being held.
“I think it is being decided that elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would not be held on a party basis, and anybody could contest elections for Pradhan and Block Development Committee (BDC),” Sukhu told the media here.
In Himachal Pradesh, elections to over 3600 panchayats, seven Municipal Corporations, 29 Municipal Councils and 37 Nagar Panchayats are to be held before May 31.
Referring to the women’s reservation bill, the chief minister said that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi first passed the women’s reservation bill in the Rajya Sabha, and Rajiv Gandhi gave 33 per cent reservation to women in PRI and ULB elections. He accused the BJP of playing politics on the issue. (PTI)
