RAMBAN, Apr 13: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) remained blocked for about four hours in Magarkote area of Ramsu here today as the locals staged protest over the alleged disappearance of a driver under suspicious circumstances.
The protesters were demanding that the authorities should expedite search for the missing man and take strict action against those involved in the incident.
The missing man, Tanveer Ahmed Chopan, was allegedly transporting bovines in a load carrier vehicle and was allegedly chased by some people from Digdool who allegedly forced him to stop near Magarkote.
Some reports claimed that in an attempt to escape, he fell into a fast-flowing stream, Bishlari Nallah. Following the incident, Police and rescuers launched a search operation to trace the missing man but he was not traced and Police has also constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the matter.
Amid rising tensions, normal life remained partially disrupted in the area. The highway blockade was lifted with the intervention of Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan and SSP Arun Gupta along with other officers who reached the site and assured strict action.
Official sources claimed that four suspects have been picked up in connection with the case to ensure a transparent investigation.
Meanwhile, the search operation has been intensified with teams from National Disaster Response Force assisting local authorities in tracing the missing youth.
Authorities have urged the public to maintain calm while speed of the mobile internet services in the district has been slowed down.
