MENDHAR, Apr 4: In a unique form of protest, residents of Mendhar sub-division in Poonch district on Friday raised strong resentment against the Public Works Department (PWD) and local administration over the deplorable condition of an important road.
The road, which connects the Tehsil Complex, Court Complex, Police Station and the Sub-District Hospital in Mendhar, has been in a bad condition for a long time and has further deteriorated following recent rainfall, turning into a muddy stretch and causing immense inconvenience to the general public.
Commuters, particularly patients and elderly people, are facing serious hardships while using the road on a daily basis. Alleging official apathy, the locals staged an unusual protest by planting grass in the mud-filled road to draw the attention of the authorities.
Through this symbolic act, the protesters conveyed that if the concerned department fails to repair the road, it should be left for growing grass so that at least it becomes somewhat usable for pedestrians.
Speaking on, Satish Bhargav, a local alleged that the demand for repair of the road has been pending for a long time but no concrete steps have been taken so far by the authorities.
Balram Sharma, president of Bhopar Mandal, also expressed concern over the issue and urged the administration to immediately take up repair and blacktopping of the road to provide relief to the residents.
The locals appealed to the Dy Commissioner Poonch and R&B Minister to intervene and ensure early redressal of the issue.
