Srinagar, Apr 4: The All Daily Wagers J&K Sangharsh Samiti today issued an ultimatum to the Government to address long-pending demands of daily wagers, warning of a strike and Union Territory-wide agitation if the issues remain unresolved.
Announcing the decision at a press conference, the Samiti leadership, including Bashir Ahmad Khan and its president Sunny Kant Chib, said the organisation will launch a “No Pay, No Work” strike from April 6, along with protest rallies and hunger strikes.
The group said the agitation is aimed at pressing for a comprehensive regularisation policy and strict implementation of the Minimum Wages Act.
Khan alleged that thousands of daily wagers, particularly mid-day meal cooks, continue to face financial distress despite years of service, accusing successive Governments of making “hollow promises” without tangible outcomes.
“Workers have been struggling for decades. They deserve regularisation and monthly salaries at par with regular employees,” he said.
Listing its demands, the Samiti called for a permanent employment policy, 12-month salaries, insurance coverage and additional allowances for daily wagers.
It also sought land compensation and regularisation in line with Supreme Court guidelines, stating that the measures would benefit more than 50,000 families across J&K.
The organisation said the Government’s failure to fulfil its commitments has led to growing dissatisfaction among workers, forcing them to intensify their agitation.
Highlighting specific grievances, the Samiti referred to a case in Sheikhpora Khag area of Budgam district, where a primary school is reportedly facing difficulties due to alleged unjust treatment of the family of a deceased Rehbar-e-Taleem teacher.
It demanded an inquiry into the matter and action against the officials concerned.
The group also appealed to the Prime Minister, the President of India and the Union Education Minister to intervene and ensure that the demands are addressed within the stipulated deadline to prevent escalation of protests.
