Addressing a virtual press conference here, Amit Sharma said the briefing was organised to inform the public about the Census process, its methodology and the role of citizens. He noted that Director Census could not attend the Srinagar press conference due to flight cancellation but had addressed a similar interaction in Jammu earlier.
He said the Census process in J&K has been activated at multiple levels and involves a vast administrative setup, with around 25,000-30,000 supervisors and nearly 10,000 enumerators engaged in the exercise. He added that several senior officers have been designated as Chief Principal Census Officers to oversee operations, while around 220 officers are already working in coordination to ensure smooth implementation.
Sharma stated that the Census will be conducted in two distinct phases, with each phase involving systematic data collection. He highlighted that the exercise is being carried out using advanced digital tools, including a dedicated house-listing application, GIS mapping, satellite imagery and block-level scientific planning to ensure accuracy and transparency in data collection.
He further said that a Self-Enumeration facility has been introduced through an online portal, allowing citizens to voluntarily submit their data. He urged people to visit the official portal and participate actively, adding that the platform is user-friendly and designed for secure and convenient data submission.
The officer said that senior constitutional authorities, including the President, Vice-President and Prime Minister, have already participated in the Self-Enumeration process, setting an example for citizens to follow.
Deputy Director Census Amit Kumar, addressing the media on behalf of the Director, said the self-enumeration phase will be conducted from May 17 to May 31, 2026. “This will be followed by door-to-door data collection from June 1 to June 30 under the House Listing and Housing Census phase, which will finalise the frame for population enumeration,” he said.
