JAMMU, Mar 30: Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS) has demanded serious government initiative to revive the annual Jammu Festival/Duggar Mela across all the districts of Jammu region.
In a press conference here today Gambhir Dev Singh Charak, working president DSS said that there should be a grand celebration on Baisakhi.
He said that the Jammu Festival/Duggar Mela used to be celebrated on Baisakhi annually and it was the brainchild of Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, former DSS president.
“The event was adopted as State Festival during the tenure of the then CM Dr. Farooq Abdullah and in 2007, the government further expanded the concept by organizing Jammu Festival across all the district headquarters of Jammu province.
Gambhir expressed regret that over the years the festival had been reduced to just eyewash.
He demanded immediate mobilisation of all the concerned government departments particularly the Tourism and Cultural Departments, along with local artists, craftsmen, religious organisations, NGOs, social-cultural bodies and business associations, so that the Mela does not remain a mere formality but becomes a mega event and the concerned Deputy Commissioners should be designated as nodal officers for organising the Jammu Festival in their respective districts.
Prominent amongst those who were present in the meeting were G.A Khwaja, additional general secretary, Arvinder Singh Amn, additional general secretary, Amanat Ali Shah, joint secretary, Brig. V.S Dheman, convener IT and Social Media Cell, Ravi Singh, Jagdeep Singh, secretary, Chhankar Singh, Madan Bhagat, Bhavanyu Bhagat, Tanishq, Akhileshwar Singh and others.
