2671 ration cards deleted in J&K: Govt

SRINAGAR, Mar 30: The Government today informed the Legislative Assembly that 2,671 ration cards were cancelled or deleted across the Union Territory during the financial year 2025-26 as part of an ongoing verification and updation exercise under the Public Distribution System, with the Jammu division accounting for 2,154 cases and the Kashmir division 517.
The information was provided in response to a question raised by MLA Yudhvir Sethi, who sought details of ration card cancellations, particularly in Jammu East constituency, and whether any deletions were carried out without prior notice.
According to the Government, the cancellations were undertaken after detailed scrutiny, field verification and e-KYC to remove ineligible or duplicate beneficiaries and to maintain accuracy of data.
It said no ration card has been cancelled without prior intimation to the head of the family, with lists of such cases displayed at conspicuous places in Fair Price Shops to ensure transparency.
Category-wise, 1,155 cancelled cards were under Antyodaya Anna Yojana AAY, which covers the poorest of the poor households, 810 under the Priority Household PHH category meant for eligible low-income families under the National Food Security Act, and 706 under the Non-Priority Household NPHH category comprising non-priority beneficiaries.
In the Kashmir division, 517 ration cards were cancelled, including 452 AAY, 42 PHH and 23 NPHH.
Baramulla recorded the highest number at 342 with 313 AAY and 29 PHH, followed by Budgam with 63 all AAY. Ganderbal saw 55 cancellations, all AAY, while Anantnag reported 31 including 8 PHH and 23 NPHH.
Srinagar had 19 cancellations, all AAY, while Pulwama reported 5 including 2 AAY and 3 PHH. Shopian recorded 2 PHH cancellations, while Bandipora, Kulgam and Kupwara reported zero cases.
In the Jammu division, 2,154 ration cards were cancelled, comprising 703 AAY, 768 PHH and 683 NPHH.
Jammu district recorded the highest number at 580 with 515 AAY, 42 PHH and 23 NPHH, followed by Reasi with 259 including 30 AAY, 133 PHH and 96 NPHH.
Doda reported 254 cancellations including 9 AAY, 103 PHH and 142 NPHH, while Rajouri had 223 including 33 AAY, 97 PHH and 93 NPHH.
Kishtwar recorded 201 cancellations including 60 AAY, 95 PHH and 46 NPHH, followed by Ramban with 170 including 20 AAY, 66 PHH and 84 NPHH.
Udhampur reported 150 cancellations including 12 AAY, 66 PHH and 72 NPHH, while Poonch had 140 including 13 AAY, 55 PHH and 72 NPHH.
Kathua recorded 93 cancellations including 3 AAY, 57 PHH and 33 NPHH, while Samba reported 84 including 8 AAY, 54 PHH and 22 NPHH.
