JAMMU, Mar 28: A police officer posted in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sustained injuries after being assaulted by a group of unidentified persons near the Jewel Chowk area late Friday night, officials said.
The incident took place around 11:15 PM when the officer, identified as Sikander Chouhan, was travelling in his personal vehicle from Jewel Chowk towards Dogra Chowk.
Near St Peter School, an unidentified vehicle coming from the opposite direction attempted to stop his car, they said.
Officials stated that when the officer confronted the occupants of the vehicle, another vehicle carrying some persons hit his car from behind. The assailants then snatched the keys of his vehicle, leading to an argument.
Officials said during the altercation, some of them attacked the officer with fists, blows and a sharp weapon, causing injuries to his right hand.
They said some passersby later intervened and informed the police, but the attackers managed to flee from the spot before police reached the scene.
Meanwhile, police have taken cognisance of the incident and detained some suspects in connection with the case.
A case FIR number 52/2026 has also been registered at Police Station Nowabad under sections 121(1), 126(2) and 191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation has been taken up.
