Five kidnappers arrested from Kolkata, kingpin absconding

28JAMMU, Mar 27: Two Jammu youths were rescued from the clutches of their kidnappers from a hotel in Kolkata as Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have busted an inter-State job fraud and abduction racket.
Addressing media persons here, SP Jammu South, Dr Ajay Sharma said that one Jagmohan Singh recently lodged a police complaint with Police Station Gandhi Nagar, alleging therein that his son Maninder Singh and his associate Tushar Chib, had been kidnapped by some unknown persons in Kolkata, who had been demanding ransom of Rs 35 lakh for their release.
He said the victims were reportedly lured by the kingpin Sunil Kejriwal of Panipat, Haryana, through his Jammu-based agents Pushvinder Singh and Ajay Kumar on the promises of securing work visas for Australia.
He said the youths were taken to Kolkata and confined in a hotel, where the accused made threatening calls to their families, demanding Rs 35 lakh for their release and warning them against approaching the police.
Acting on the complaint, the police officer said, an FIR number 67/2026 under sections 318(4), 127(3), and 308(2) was registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station on March 19.
Accordingly, he said, a police team led by IO Inspector Vinay Kumar and supervised by SDPO South, along with SHO Gandhi Nagar, Inspector Jaipal Sharma, rushed to Kolkata and, with the assistance of Kolkata Police, rescued the victims and arrested the five accused.
They were identified as Sushil, Prashant, Praveen, Vansh Manjul, and Mohammad Sameer Ansari, all residents of Panipat in Haryana.
The SP Jammu South said they were brought to Jammu on transit remand and their further investigation is underway.
The police officer further said that during questioning, it emerged that the accused operated under one Sunil Kejriwal and another associate Sameer, who remain absconding.
According to him, the victims were provided free tickets for their travel to Kolkata, while agents collected around 34 lakh from their families, which has been recovered by the police.
Meanwhile, in three separate cases registered at Police Stations Bagh-e-Bahu and Trikuta Nagar, the SP Jammu South, Dr Ajay Sharma said that police recovered the stolen gold and silver ornaments, including 2.15 kilograms silver and one tola gold, worth around Rs 30 lakh.
