SRINAGAR, Feb 3: High Court today directed the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department to deposit Rs 25 lakh as compensation in lieu of land taken under land acquisition for construction of a road in Bandipora district.
Justice Moksha Kazmi directed the concerned authorities to deposit the amount before the office of Deputy Commissioner Bandipora within two weeks. The direction has been passed in a contempt plea filed by an old aged Laldin Chichi and others seeking compliance of earlier court directions.
The court had directed the Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, to constitute a team of revenue officers to demarcate the land utilized for the road project in order to ascertain as to whether any proprietary land or share of the petitioners in Shamilat land had been used.
The court had directed the initiation of acquisition proceedings and payment of compensation if such utilization was found. During the hearing, the revenue authorities informed the Court that the directions had been complied with.
However, the funds required for acquisition had not yet been released by the R&B Department. The Government Advocate representing the R&B Department assured the court that Rs 25 lakh would be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, within two weeks.
The court has made it clear that in case the amount is not deposited then the concerned officer of the department would appear before the court on the next date of hearing.
