NEW YORK, Jan 4: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the US operation Absolute Resolve, under which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was captured, an “act of war” and a “violation of international and federal law.”
He said that this “blatant pursuit of regime change doesn’t just affect those abroad”; it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call the city home.
Concerned over the “safety of Venezuelans and the safety of every New Yorker,” Mamdani said his administration will “continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance.”
He added that he was briefed this morning on the US military capture of Maduro and his wife, as well as their planned imprisonment in federal custody in New York City.
In a post on X, Mamdani wrote, “Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law.”
Venezuelan President Nicol?s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in Caracas and flown out of the country in an operation “Absolute Resolve” of intelligence agencies and US law enforcement and undertaken by “US Army Delta Force” commandos.
President Donald Trump said that Maduro and his wife have been indicted on charges of alleged “drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracies” in the Southern District of New York and will face trial.
Maduro has been transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in New York City. Described as “disgusting” with “horrifying” conditions, the MDC is known for its squalid conditions, chronic understaffing, inmate violence and power outages.
Maduro is set to face drugs and weapons charges in a Manhattan federal court next week. (UNI)
