Judicial Inquiry Comm records statements of cops, Magistrates

Public to be called in next sitting

JAMMU, Dec 23: The Judicial Inquiry Commission headed by Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice BS Chauhan has recorded statements of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Ladakh Police personnel and Magistrates in connection with September 24 violence in Leh town in which four civilians were killed and 100 others including paramilitary personnel were injured while offices of BJP, Hill Council and some vehicles were torched by the mob.
Rigzin Spalbar, Joint Secretary to the Commission today said that the Commission under the chairmanship of Justice Dr B S Chauhan conducted its proceedings from December 17-23 and recorded statements of CRPF personnel, Magistrates and Ladakh Police personnel.

“The Commission has already collected and examined their written statements submitted earlier as part of the preliminary process,’’ he said.
Spalbar further said that in the next sitting to be held in near future, public will be called to record their statements before the Commission.
He added that the dates for recording statements of individuals who have already submitted their affidavits will be announced in due course.
All the officers who were on duty or assigned duties had been called upon to appear before the Commission and record their statements from Friday.
The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance have already submitted their statements before the Commission.
The Inquiry Commission earlier through a public notice had issued warning that any intimidation, coercion, or obstruction of witnesses or individuals connected to the probe will lead to strict legal action.
Clashes erupted in Leh on September 24 during bandh called by youth wing of the LAB on delay in talks by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs over the demands of Statehood and Sixth schedule status.
Later, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was sitting on dharna, was booked under NSA and lodged in Jodhpur jail. The Centre has blamed Wangchuk for instigating the violence.
