KALAKOTE, Dec 22: An old mortar shell today recovered near the Kalakote Police Station in Rajouri district, triggering brief panic in the area.
However, prompt action by the police ensured that the situation was swiftly brought under control.
According to police officials, a rusted and old mortar shell was detected near the Police Station premises.
Immediately after the recovery, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was called to the spot and the area was promptly cordoned off and thoroughly sanitized to ensure the safety of the public.
After a detailed inspection and search of the surrounding area, the mortar shell was safely defused and destroyed as per standard operating procedures, officials said.
