LEH, Dec 18: A delegation of the College Teachers’ Association (CTA), Union Territory of Ladakh, led by Dr Sonam Wangmo, Assistant Professor and president, CTA Ladakh today called on the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, at Lok Niwas, Leh.
The delegation was accompanied by Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Former Member of Parliament (17th Lok Sabha).
During the meeting, the delegation submitted a detailed representation highlighting long-pending issues faced by college teaching faculties in the Union Territory.
The interaction witnessed in-depth and solution-oriented deliberations on key concerns, including lack of cadre clarity, prolonged stagnation in promotions and placements and non-grant of legitimate financial benefits to higher education faculty since the formation of UT Ladakh.
The CTA highlighted that these unresolved issues have adversely affected faculty morale, career progression, financial security and academic productivity, thereby impacting the overall quality of higher education in the region.
The delegation pointed out that college teachers were originally recruited by the J&K Public Service Commission and have historically functioned under the Higher Education Department.
A majority of faculty members had formally opted to continue under the Higher Education Department, and even retirement and superannuation cases are being processed through the same department.
Despite this, promotions and Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) benefits have remained stalled for years.
The delegation strongly demanded that all faculty members due for promotion on or before December 31, 2024, be granted their rightful promotions along with consequential financial benefits and arrears.
Jamyang Tsering Namgyal urged the LG to personally intervene for a fair and time-bound resolution.
The Lieutenant Governor assured the delegation of serious consideration and directed that the matter be examined expeditiously.
The delegation expressed gratitude for his receptive approach and appreciated the support of Jamyang Tsering Namgyal.
The meeting was also attended by Dr Syed Ali Shah, Assistant Professor and vice president, CTA Ladakh, and Dr Tashi Dorjay, Assistant Professor and Treasurer, CTA Ladakh, representing the collective voice of around 130 Assistant Professors from various disciplines serving under the Department of Higher Education, Administration of UT Ladakh.
