SRINAGAR, Oct 23: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader, Sunil Sharma, today hit out at the National Conference (NC), accusing it of hypocrisy and saying the party has “no moral grounds” to call the BJP or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) communal.

Sharma made the remarks while speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the first day of the nine-day autumn session of the Assembly. His comments came in response to an NC legislator who, during obituary references earlier in the day, had termed the BJP and RSS communal.

“The NC has no moral grounds to call the BJP or RSS communal. This is the same party that, on 4th April 1979, when Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged, caused unrest. Some of the members who were speaking today are relatives of those who burnt religious books and religious places across South Kashmir. They created mayhem. So, they have no right to call us communal.”
The BJP leader further alleged that the NC’s “communal history” stretched back nearly a century. “Their communal history starts from 1931. I have told you the story of 1979. And if you want more, I can open a book on the 1990s,” he said.
Referring to the NC’s claim that it would win all four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma said the party did not even trust its own legislators. “They are saying that all four seats are theirs. Let’s wait for tomorrow. The NC does not trust its own MLAs. The people who are running behind legislators with the Quran, making them swear to vote for them, will they claim four seats? Even after that, they do not believe their own MLAs,” he said.
He also referred to the Assembly’s first-day proceedings, noting that it is customary to begin the session by paying tribute to the deceased members. “It is a tradition that on the first day of the session, obituary references or tribute are paid to members who have been part of this House. Today, tribute were offered to seven people, including former Governor Satya Pal Malik, MLAs and Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) who have passed away,” he said.
