DEORIA (UP), Oct 18: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Saturday that doubling the income of the farmers of the country is the government’s primary objective.
Addressing a gathering in Pathardewa, about 20 kilometers from the district headquarters, the union Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the main objective of the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department is to ensure food security in the country, increase farmers’ income and provide nutritious food grains.
He said, “To achieve this, the department is working on six key dimensions, increasing production, reducing costs, ensuring fair prices for farmers, compensating for losses, increasing agricultural diversification and encouraging natural farming.”
He said that in the past 11 years, food grain production in the country has increased by approximately 40 percent. “Record production has been achieved in wheat, rice, maize and soybean production, making the country self-sufficient in these crops.” hr said.
Chouhan said that India is still not self-sufficient in pulses, despite being the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses. “To address this shortcoming, the Pulses Mission has been launched under the Prime Minister’s guidance. A comprehensive strategy has been developed for this purpose, prioritising research and development,” he said.
He said that farmers should use good seeds for a good harvest and the government is providing them with quality seeds.
