Kerala: India’s first “water budget” unveiled in Kannur

KANNUR, Sep 24 : The Kannur Municipal Corporation in Kerala has launched the country’s first-ever “Water Budget”, a pioneering initiative that aims to assess surplus or shortage of water availability as also monitor its usage across the Corporation’s 55 wards.

The document was officially released today by Kannur Corporation Mayor Muslih Madathil, who handed it over to Haritha Kerala Mission District Coordinator E K Somasekharan, in a function held at the Dussehra venue at the Collectorate ground.

Prepared by the Haritha Kerala Mission as part of the state government’s Nava Kerala Action Plan, the water budget aims to ensure efficient water storage, conservation and utilisation during periods of scarcity, while also preventing pollution and misuse of drinking water.

A water budget is a comprehensive, data-driven document that evaluates water availability and usage in each area using scientific methods.

It compares rainfall patterns over specific periods with the water demand across various sectors, helping determine whether there is a water surplus or deficit at any given time. The corporation, which is currently facing semi-critical levels of groundwater utilisation, can work towards improving its water security by implementing the strategies outlined in the Water Budget.

Continued efforts based on the documents’ recommendations will help shift the situation to a safer, more sustainable level. Additionally, the public initiatives under the Kannampuzha Revitalisation project, which serves as a model for watershed conservation in Kerala, play a key role in the water budget. This innovative water budget will support the corporation in strengthening its future water security efforts and help achieve long-term development goals. (UNI)
