JAMMU, Sept 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi released ‘Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika’, a book translated into 21 languages recognized by the Constitution of India, including Dogri, while inaugurating the birth centenary celebrations of Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Guwahati in Assam.
The occasion marked a significant tribute to the legendary singer, composer and cultural icon whose creations continue to inspire generations across the country. The Prime Minister stated that the initiative would help people across the nation and abroad to gain wider knowledge about the legend.
Among the 21 editions, the Dogri translation has drawn particular attention. The work has been translated by eminent Dogri writer Rajeshwar Singh ‘Raju’, recipient of Sahitya Akademi and State Awards, who has conveyed the essence of Hazarika’s philosophy to the readers of the Duggar region. Cultural observers view this as a meaningful step in deepening links between Assam and Jammu and Kashmir through literature.
The initiative carries the imprint of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who involved Assam Prakashan Parishad and mobilized state resources to bring out translations that resonate across India. His role has been central in placing Assam’s cultural legacy at the national level and shaping the year-long centenary celebrations as a countrywide event.
The project is regarded as a major cultural outreach. By making the book available in 21 languages, it opens access to Bhupen Hazarika’s philosophy of humanity, integration and compassion beyond linguistic boundaries.
The original book was written in Assamese by novelist Anuradha Sharma Pujari. The translation project was carried out under the supervision of young project manager Aprajita Pujari, who ensured completion within the stipulated timeframe. Translators from different corners of the country representing each language were present during the release, underlining the collective effort involved in the centenary initiative.
