SRINAGAR, July 31: At least a dozen persons were injured in clashes between protesters and police in South Kashmir district of Kulgam.
The clashes took place on a day the Government announced that it would not allow a Kashmir Pandit group to take the pilgrimage to Kausarnag through the South Kashmir route.
In response to a call for protests by the Kausarnag Bachao Front, hundreds of locals marched towards Aherbal. When protesters reached Gurwatan, the police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personal intercepted them and charged batons to disperse them.
The protesters pelted stones on Police and CRPF leading to clashes. Police fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters. In the ensuing clashes, at least 12 people sustained injuries.
The Government has withdrawn permission to the All Pandit Migrants Coordination Committee (APMCC) for a fresh pilgrimage to the Pir Panjal glacial lake Kousarnag from Southern Kashmir.
With a shutdown in Kulgam and Shopian district on Wednesday, authorities conveyed to the APMCC that the pilgrimage to Kousarnag would be permitted only through Chasana in Jammu’s Reasi district.
A police spokesman said here that Kulgam police restored order and situation was brought to normal at Aherbal after a stone pelting incident. A group of people blocked the road at Aherbal today. “Among the group some miscreants pelted stones on a police party. Police used mild lathi charge and chased them away. Three persons received minor injuries during the pelting. Situation has been restored to normal”, the spokesman added.
