Sir,
The Government’s initiative, through the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, to create a national database of public libraries is a visionary step towards strengthening India’s knowledge infrastructure. Public libraries have long been the backbone of democratic access to information, especially for rural and marginalised communities.
However, the absence of a unified system has often led to duplication of resources and limited accessibility.
A centralised database will not only optimise funds by preventing overlapping purchases but also empower readers to locate books and resources across states with ease. Over time, integration of interlibrary loan systems can further expand the reach of knowledge, bridging gaps between institutions and communities.
In a world driven by digital connectivity, this initiative ensures libraries remain relevant as both cultural repositories and modern hubs of learning. It is, indeed, an essential step toward inclusive growth and an empowered India.
