SRINAGAR, Aug 21: Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former Minister Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan today termed the new bills introduced in Parliament as a direct attack on democracy and India’s federal character.
In a statement, Ramzan said the proposed laws were aimed at weakening elected Governments and silencing opposition voices. “These bills are nothing but instruments of control. By giving unchecked powers to remove Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers and Ministers, the Government is attempting to undermine the mandate of the people and replace it with agency-driven rule,” he said.
He took strong exception to the provision that allows disqualification of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers and Ministers merely on the ground of remaining in judicial custody for 30 days, even without conviction. Such measures, he said, go against the principles of justice and democratic values.
“These bills strike at the roots of representative democracy. They erode the balance of power and hand over dangerous authority to unelected institutions. This is not governance, it is political engineering,” Ramzan asserted.
The NC leader urged democratic forces across the country to unite against what he described as an attempt to alter the spirit of the Constitution. He cautioned that if these measures are allowed to pass, they would set a precedent where the will of the people is replaced by authoritarian designs.
“The battle is not for parties alone but for safeguarding democracy itself,” he added.
