Yogi demands opening of Sun Temple Martand

ANANTNAG, Aug 20: Senior KP leader and Apni Party (AP) in-charge Anantnag East constituency, M.K. Yogi has expressed deep concern and dismay over the closure of the Sun Temple and its Park at Kharibal, Mattan, which has remained shut following the recent Baisaran episode.
Yogi who visited the area interacted with local shopkeepers and residents, who highlighted their suffering due to loss of livelihood caused by the absence of tourists and pilgrims.
He was accompanied by prominent locals including Mohd Yousuf Sofi, Kulvinder Singh Bali, Mohd Yousuf Zargar, Subash Kachroo, Shabir Ahmed Itoo Basant Ji Khar and others
During the visit, Yogi terming the Martand Sun temple a symbol of Kashmir’s glorious history, religious traditions, and cultural heritage, said that its closure has hurt the sentiments of devotees and affected the local economy.
He further pointed out that illegal encroachments around the temple premises have created serious problems for pilgrims. He suggested that if these encroachments are removed, the land be developed into a parking facility for more than 150 vehicles, which would ease the difficulties of yatris and tourists.
Yogi assured the locals that he will take up the matter with the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and press for immediate reopening of the Martand Sun Temple and its adjoining park,removal of illegal encroachments and development of a dedicated parking facility, establishment of basic facilities such as drinking water, sanitation, and pathways for yatris and adequate security arrangements for pilgrims and tourists.
