SRINAGAR, Aug 18: Residents of Watayen Pohrupeth village in Langate area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district alleged that they have been without proper electricity for over a decade while still receiving monthly bills, accusing authorities of indifference and neglect.
The village, located near the Sopore-Handwara highway, has not seen any significant investment in power infrastructure, leaving households dependent on costly and unreliable alternatives. Residents said that the absence of electricity has disrupted their daily lives, affecting everything from children’s education to household work. “We have been living in darkness for years. The administration has turned a blind eye to our suffering,” Abdul Majeed, a resident of the village, said.
Adding to their frustration, villagers alleged that they are billed regularly by the power department despite not receiving electricity. “We get monthly bills as if we are enjoying a full supply, but in reality, there is no service at all. It is sheer injustice,” Shakeela Begum, another resident, said.
Locals said they have repeatedly approached the concerned authorities but claim their pleas have gone unheard. “We have knocked on every door, but nobody listens. It looks like our village doesn’t exist for the administration,” one of them said.
The residents now demanded urgent intervention to resolve the issue. They called for immediate investment in infrastructure and a probe into what they termed “unfair billing practices.”
