Principal orders investigation, forms committee

Srinagar, July 30: As if the recent problem at SMHS Hospital wasn’t enough, a video allegedly recorded by a young doctor inside Lal Ded hospital has now surfaced online, triggering widespread outrage across Kashmir.
The undated video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the doctor casually walking through highly restricted areas of the hospital.
These include the labour room and the operation theatre-spaces where even close family members are not permitted.
Patients are visible in the background, with some undergoing treatment during the filming.
In one segment, the doctor is heard saying, “We went to the labour room, there was nothing, so we are going to the OT,” before turning the camera to show a live surgical procedure being performed on a patient.
In another part of the video, he is seen pausing in a corridor to take selfies with fellow doctors, several of whom appear smiling and posing for the camera-seemingly unbothered by their surroundings. He is accompanied by at least two other male colleagues.
Officials at Lal Ded Hospital told Excelsior that the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has constituted a committee to investigate the matter and submit a report.
“These students are from the final year and are posted here. It is a case of grave misconduct, and the strictest possible action will be taken against those involved. Once the inquiry is completed, these students will be suspended immediately,” the officials said.
While the video has been widely circulated, it has sparked serious legal and ethical concerns.
Medical professionals and members of the public have condemned the act as a “blatant violation of patient privacy and professional standards.”
Notably, photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside hospitals across Jammu and Kashmir, including Lal Ded Hospital.
These restrictions-applicable to emergency wards, ICUs, and operating theatres-are intended to protect patient dignity and preserve the sanctity of healthcare spaces.
