GMC Baramulla takes corrective measures after complaints

Srinagar, July 20: Following an outcry from the locals that senior residents are usually found missing, especially from the emergency section, the authorities at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla have now ordered daily evening rounds to ensure accountability.
The directives have been issued by the Principal, GMC Baramulla, Dr. Majid Jahangir, who has designated a consultant and tasked him with the responsibility of conducting the rounds.
“In the interest of administration & better patient care services at associated Hospital GMC Baramulla, Dr. Charanjit Singh, Consultant, Department of General Medicine, is hereby directed to conduct daily evening rounds of the Casualty/Emergency Section in coordination with the on-duty Casualty Medical Officer,” the directives read.
The Principal has stated that these directions have been issued in the interest of enhancing emergency care, ensuring clinical accountability and improving patient satisfaction.
However, the demand of the locals to publish the duty roster-detailing the doctors who have the night duty and those who have day duty-is yet to be complied with.
Earlier, it was alleged that in many departments, senior residents remain absent and delegate their responsibilities to interns, who are left to attend patients.
The locals also noted that there was no proper accountability and that medical students are often stationed to handle patients, which, they said, raised serious questions about the functioning of the medical college.
Meanwhile, in a separate set of directives issued by the Medical Superintendent, GMC Baramulla, the entry of medical representatives into hospital premises has been restricted.
It has been ordered that no medical representative will be allowed to visit any doctor or hospital section prior to 3:30 PM on any working day.
“Medical Representatives found violating this order by entering OPDs, wards, or any other patient care areas before 3:30 PM will be dealt with strictly under the relevant rules and may face permanent debarment from visiting the hospital.”
The Medical Superintendent has noted that it has been observed that MRs of various pharmaceutical and medical companies frequently visit the Out Patient Departments (OPDs), wards, and other hospital sections during regular working hours and patient consultation time, “causing avoidable disturbances and interruption in the routine healthcare delivery system.”
The directives noted that any doctor or hospital staff member found entertaining MRs before the stipulated time shall also be held accountable and disciplinary action will be initiated accordingly.
All Heads of Departments and Section Incharges have been informed to ensure strict implementation of this order in their respective areas of responsibility.
Security staff and gate personnel are directed to enforce this entry restriction and maintain a record of all visiting Medical Representatives, including time and purpose of visit.
All concerned have been directed to adhere to the instructions in letter and spirit, failing which strict action shall be taken as warranted under rules.
