Helicopter service to Amarnath suspended due to bad weather

SRINAGAR :  Helicopter service from Baltal and Pahalgam to holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas has been suspended due to rains and poor visibility since this morning.
However, despite rain, pilgrimage from Baltal and Nunwan Pahalgam base camps continued to the holy cave, where about 2.45 lakh pilgrims paid obeisance before the self made ice-lingam since the commencement 45-day-long yatra from June 28.    Official said because of rain and poor visibility, helicopter service has been suspended from Baltal and Pahalgam helipads to cave shrine as a precautionary measure.    Service will be resumed once weather improves, they said.    However, fresh batches of pilgrims, including women and sadhus, left Baltal base camp this morning despite rains.    Similarly, fresh batches of yatris left Nunwan Pahalgam base camp for Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on traditional route. However, some yatris will continue their journey to next halting station while others have night halt at Chandanwari, they said.
Officials said pilgrims, who had night halt at different halting stations on this traditional route have started their journey towards the cave shrine this morning.    Yesterday, 12,431 pilgrims paid obeisance at the Holy Cave. With this, a total of 2,44,322 pilgrims have paid obeisance at the Holy Cave since the commencement of Yatra.
