Directorate of Economics & Statistics celebrates National Statistics Day

JAMMU, June 29: The 19th National Statistics Day was celebrated by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, here today.
The day celebrated under the guidance of director general Economics & Statistics, J&K, Satvir Kour Sudan commemorated the day, aligning with the nationwide observance dedicated to the birth anniversary of Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the pioneer of modern statistics in India.
The theme for 2025 was “Celebrating 75 Years of National Sample Survey” marking the significant contribution of the National Sample Survey in providing reliable and timely statistical data that supports evidence-based decision-making and governance in India.
Ashu Gupta, regional director, Evaluation & Statistics, Jammu presided over the function & delivered the welcome address.
She underscored the significance of the day’s theme and its relevance to the current statistical landscape and highlighted the pivotal role of the National Sample Survey in shaping data-driven policies and programs over the past seven and a half decades and emphasized upon the importance of accurate data collection and analysis in the formulation of effective governance strategies.
The day was also celebrated at Directorate of Economics & Statistics, J&K Bemina.
G A Qureshi, former director general, E&S J&K, was the chief guest on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Qureshi elaborated on the history and significance of the National Sample Survey (NSS) and the legacy of Prof Mahalanobis.
Earlier, director general, Regional Directorate, E&S Kashmir, Ather Hussain Qadri in his inaugural address, emphasized the importance of the day and highlighted the relevance of this year’s theme in light of recent technological advancements.
He spoke about the growing role of data-driven decision-making and the development of dashboards and mobile applications, which have significantly streamlined the collection and use of data in surveys and censuses.
Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College also celebrated the National Statistics Day with great enthusiasm and academic spirit under the overall supervision of Dr Romesh Kumar Gupta, principal of the College.
The event was graced by Dr Munish Kumar Sharma, Professor and Head Division of Stastics and CS, of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu, as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Sharma underscored the indispensable role of statistics in modern research and governance.
In his address, Dr Romesh Kumar Gupta, principal of the College, emphasized the significance of the day in cultivating a statistical mindset among students.
He shared, that it is indeed a proud moment for GGM Science College as we have the honour to start Statistics as a minor subject under the FYUG programme from this academic session.
This initiative is a step towards equipping our students with multidisciplinary skills and analytical tools necessary for today’s rapidly evolving academic and professional landscapes.
