JAMMU, June 18: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious exception to the human rights violation of the inmates of the Jagti township in Nagrota, one of the major refugee camps of displaced Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu.
The NHRC which took the strong note of the petition filed by Vishava Ranjan Pandita an advocate, has issued a notice to Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner, Migrants Jammu with the directives to get the allegations made in the complaint inquired and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks of issuance of this notice.
The Commission said that the complainant a resident of Jagti genocide victim camp has raised serious concerns about the deplorable condition of the shelter, which is in state of absolute despair. Quoting the complainant the Commission said, “He alleged that despite repeatedly submitting complaints to the concerned authorities, no action has been taken to address the issue. The living conditions in the camp are steadily deteriorating, making it increasingly uninhabitable.”
The Commission in its notice served to Relief Commissioner said, “Furthermore the complainant stated that even basic necessities are not being provided, adding to the sufferings of the residents of the township”.
The Commission, while taking serious view of the same maintained that the allegations made in the complaint prima facile seem to be serious violations of the human rights of the residents.
The Bench of NHRC presided by Priyanka Kanoongo, Member has issued directives to Registry to issue a notice to the Commissioner (Relief and Rehabilitation), Jammu with the directions to get the allegations made in the complaint to inquire into and to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks for perusal by the Commission.
The Commissioner Relief and Rehabilitation has been directed to take appropriate action in the matter and submit the Action Taken Report to the Commission four weeks from date of receipt of this letter.
The complainant has highlighted worst condition of buildings constructed to rehabilitate the victims of terrorism from Valley, dilapidated condition of the Nagrota Jagti road and many other grave issues concerning the inmates of Jagti township.
Meanwhile, Pintoo Ji a social activist from the township and president Global Solace has expressed his concern over the contaminated water being supplied to the township which has been basic cause for various ailments of the inmates of Jagti.
In his letter to concerned authorities in J&K Government he alleged that deaths in the township have mainly been caused due to water borne diseases and despite his and other camp inmates pleas to higher ups in the Government no steps were taken to solve this grave problem.
