Sir,
This refers to the write up’ Use English to spread our culture’ by Dr.Bharat Jhunjhunwala (DE, June 24,2014) The learned writer, in his thought provoking article, has rightly remarked that use of Hindi definitely helps the speakers (politicians)to assert Indian culture before the foreign dignitaries but at the same time we must use English to spread our culture across the world. As of now, English has made inroads in our everyday life to such an extent that we cannot afford to discard its use in India. The influence of English is on the increase rather than on the decrease in India.More and more English medium schools are opening with each passing day.
Even in remote areas so called English. medium Public schools are flourishing and parents prefer to send their wards to such schools. The readership of English is increasing. Most of the literature in the world has been produced or translated in English. It is also the language of computer and internet, research and advancement. Whatever new discoveries, or inventions are made, they are usually made in advanced countries such as USA,UK,France etc and exclusively reported in English. It also serves as a link language among people of different states in India and among different countries across the world. Candidates possessing excellent communication skills in English are preferred by the MNCs and big Corporate Houses to those who can’t speak English fluently. It has also been referred to as the global language.
Thus, it can be fairly concluded that we, in India, must evolve such a system of Education that every student acquires a working knowledge of English. At the same time, equal attention needs to be given to the promotion and use of regional/ national language(s) of India. The medium of instruction in the early classes should be the regional language. But English too needs to be given equal attention. We can promote other languages without rejecting English which is a globalised language. Instead,we must make sincere steps to use it as an instrument to propagate rich Indian culture across the globe rather than restricting its use.
Yours etc…..
