JAMMU, June 25: National Building Construction Corporation’s (NBCC’s) apathy has proved fatal not only for the commuters and business community, but also for the VIPs, as the road near Jewel Chowk continues to be in deplorable condition for the past over a month due to slow pace of work being carried out by the concerned agency.
The road near Jewel Chowk is in dilapidated condition for the past over a month and the slow pace of work carried out by the NBCC has put the life of the commuters, shopkeepers and general people at stake.
Road accidents are taking place on this awful damaged portion of the road every day, but NBCC responsible for repairing and reconstruction of the said road is watching all this with open eyes and has not taken any concrete steps to reconstruct the road at the earliest for the relief of the people in general and commuters in particular.
Not only the common masses and shopkeepers, VIPs are also made to face the warmth of this dilapidated road, as this road also leads to Civil Secretariat of the winter capital vis-à-vis Srinagar and neighbouring States.
Talking to Excelsior, one of the commuter Vishal Sharma, who is also a college student said that, “I have to pass from this road to and fro on daily basis to reach my college and back home and this road is in worst condition for the last over a month.
“Why to dig road and put the life of the people at risk, if it can not be reconstructed to its original form within limited time frame”, Sharma said.
Rahul Sharma, a shopkeeper near Jewel while expressing his anguish said that the road was dug some one month back by NBCC for some sewerage work, but due to slow pace of work by the concerned authorities, people especially the shopkeepers are facing lots of problems.
“Hundreds of vehicles pass on this road on daily basis and the dust particles emitting out are creating health hazards for the people and also creating problems for the shopkeepers”, he added.
Another shopkeeper Bishan Sharma said that it is justified that NBCC is carrying out sewerage work, which will benefit the Jammuites in the time to come, but NBCC should also understand that the work initiated by them should be completed at the earliest.
“If this work continues with this pace of speed, then this busiest road near Jewel Chowk could not be restored for vehicular movement for several years”, he said while making mockery of the concerned agency involved in the repairing of the road.
When contacted Mohammad Rafiq, General Manager, NBCC told Excelsior that the ongoing work near Jewel is a part of Sewerage Treatment Plant and will be completed in the first week of July.
He said that no work would be taken further after completion of this work, he said, adding that the pending work of the Sewerage Treatment Plant will be continued after completing of the Shri Amarnath Yatra for the convenience of the pilgrims.
