SAMBA, Feb 2: Local youth foiled a bovine smuggling attempt here today, rescuing four cows that were found unconscious and tied up in a tempo traveller in a cruel manner.
As per the information available with the Excelsior, the incident occurred in the hilly area of Sumb, where members of the Gau Raksha Dal became suspicious of a vehicle in the wee hours and signalled it to stop.
However, the driver attempted to flee, prompting the youths to chase the vehicle for several kilometres.
The vehicle’s tire eventually punctured, but the driver continued driving for some distance before stopping near Parel village, a few kilometers from Samba.
Upon hearing the vehicle’s sounds, local residents gathered at the scene. The crowd became angry, vandalized the vehicle, and assaulted the driver.
Later, police arrived at the scene and arrested the driver, rescuing the cows from the vehicle.
Authorities believed the smugglers have started using new routes and vehicles to avoid police check posts in Kathua and Samba districts.
The smuggling ring, according to them, has also shifted to using more expensive vehicles, including tempo travellers, instead of traditional trucks and load carriers.
The arrested smuggler has been identified as Sardar Bhupinder Singh (42) of Channi Himmat, Jammu.
Police have seized the vehicle and registered a case at the Samba police station for further investigation into the matter.
