JAMMU, Apr 19: Accusing the National Conference (NC) of creating atmosphere of fear and uncertainty to discourage people from participating in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today alleged that NC was even dragging Army into political manoeuvres forgetting the yeoman’s service rendered by it in fighting terrorism and restoration of peace in trouble –torn State.
“An attempt is being made to divert people’s attention from their failures. NC leaders are leveling false and baseless allegations on Indian Army and even on BJP, and are browbeating central leadership on one pretext or the other with a sole motive of exploiting the innocent Kashmiris,” senior BJP leader Farooq Khan told reporters today.
BJP’s reaction came in the backdrop of NC president and its candidate for Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, Dr Farooq Abdullah’s statement that Army facilitated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s victory in 2002 Assembly elections.
“Dr Abdullah should not forget that it was the brave Jawans of Army alongwith Jammu Kashmir police, and para-military forces, who on one hand brought back peace to the State, through unparallel sacrifices and on the other resurrected destroyed schools, hospitals, guest houses, restored bridges, Mosques, Mazars and drinking water supplies and provided free medical care and goodwill to the suffering Kashmiris, while he himself fled to London and was enjoying there,” the former IGP said.
Mr Khan added that it was NC that exploited the situation in 1996 and once again grabbed power, courtesy-mobile and fake voters. After return to power in 1996 the NC did not care to utter even a single word about the sacrifices of large number of officers and men of Indian Army which had freed the State from the clutches of terrorists. Castigating the Union Minister Farooq Abdullah, Mr Khan said NC leaders, after seeing the writing on the wall and their defeat in the Parliamentary elections, are in panic and are now trying to drag the Indian Army in an unnecessary controversy.
While replying to a question on claim of separatist leader Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani that emissaries of Narendra Modi had approached him, Mr Khan said, “It is a white lie and crude attempt on his part to gain some media attention.” “Geelani is playing in the hands of a particular party and trying to create confusion in the minds of Kashmiri voters but this time he will not succeed,” added Mr Khan.
