JAMMU, Apr 16: 27th Convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was organized today at IGNOU Maidan Garhi New Delhi Headquarters and simultaneously at its 53 Regional Centres across the country including Regional Centre Jammu via tele- conferencing.
Ashok Thakur, Secretary, Higher Education, Union Ministry of Human Resource was chief guest and delivered the convocation address while Dr Vijitha Nanayakkara, Vice Chancellor, The Open University of Sri Lanka, was the guest of honour at IGNOU Headquarters at Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. Prof M Aslam, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU presided over the function.
Convocation at Jammu was held at Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Er Kiran Wattal, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, was the local chief guest on this occasion at Regional Centre Jammu and awarded Degree Certificates to the eligible learners.
A total of 3940 learners from Regional Centre Jammu were declared successful and eligible to receive Diplomas and Degree Certificates for various Bachelor, Diploma, PG Diploma and Master Degree Programmes. Around 300 Master Degree learners were awarded Degree Certificates in the Convocation function at Jammu in person.
One of the learners namely Harmeet Kour was awarded Gold Medal for her meritorious performance in MA (Philosophy) programme throughout the country.
In Jammu Regional Centre, the pass percentage of men in respect of Bachelor Degree programmes is higher than that of women and in respect of the Master Degree programmes, the percentage of women is on the higher side. Around 63 percent graduates of the 27th Convocation at Regional Centre Jammu are men and around 55 percent post graduates are women.
Kiran Wattal congratulated the pass-out students and appreciated the efforts made by the Regional Centre team for strengthening the mandate of IGNOU in the region.
Regional Director, K K Bhat, presented the Regional Centre Report and sought cooperation of Government Degree Colleges in the region for establishing Regular Study Centres of IGNOU in all the colleges.
The Regional Centre Jammu has more than 27,000 learners enrolled for the year 2013 attached with different Learner Study Centres for Student Support Services across the region and for the January 2014 admission session, RC Jammu has already crossed the 12,500 mark, he informed.
Tajinder Pal Singh, Assistant Registrar of the Regional Centre Jammu presented the vote of thanks.
