MENDHAR, Feb 14: People in Harni area of Mendhar tehsil in Poonch district observed a total shut down and blocked the Mendhar Surankote road in protest against ignoring the Harni area the oldest Niabat in granting the tehsil status.
The protest was led by PDP leader Wasim Ahmed Khan and Sarpanchs and Panchs of the area also participated in it.
They said a large number of adjoining villages which are geographically linked to Harni have been linked to B G Gali which is far away from their localities while Harni is adjacent to these villages.
The protestors said that a Settlement Tehsildar is also stationed at Harni and the township is an old Niabat also so it deserves to be given the tehsil status.
The road blockade was lifted by the people in the afternoon after the SDPO Mendhar Surinder Choudhary, Tehsildar, Mendhar, Dr Abdul Kabir, SHO Gursai, Inspector Sadaqat Qureshi and Naib Tehsildar Mohammed Sagir Choudhry assured them that they will take up the issue with the higher authorities.
The protestors warned that in case the demand was not conceded the people will intensify the agitation and the authorities will be responsible for consequences.
