The land grabbing cases that surfaced recently in Jammu province reveal that the Government has not adopted a tough posture against land mafia. In case land mafia is not curbed with an iron hand, instances like Gole Gujral, and Bajalta may surface here and there. Earlier, also, there were reports of land grabbing case at Sidhra and Sunjawan.
In view of shrinking land area, and rising prices of land, land mafia is quite active. It uses both money and muscle power to transact this illegal business.
There is urgent need to keep these anti-social elements at bay as they would encroach not only forest land but also dry ponds, parks, pastures or patches of earth which may fetch than a handsome amount of money in the market.
There is presently high demand for land in view of influx of builders who are constructing malls, flats and shopping complexes.
