JAMMU, Aug 16: Indian troops yesterday exchanged greetings and sweets with their Pakistani counterparts in Poonch, Jammu and Samba districts of the region on the occasion of the country’s 77th Independence Day.
In Poonch, the Indian Army and Pakistani troops exchanged sweets along the Line of Control (LoC) in Chakan Da Bagh and another forward area, officials said.
Both the sides met at cross-LoC points for half an hour and exchanged sweets and greetings.
Similar meetings were also held at these points on August 14 on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and Pakistan Rangers also exchanged sweets at various border outposts (BOPs) under the Jammu frontier in a very cordial atmosphere, the officials said.
The exchange of sweets took place at all BOPs in Samba, Kathua, R S Pura and Akhnoor.
Sweets exchange also took place at main cross-border point of Suchetgarh along the International Border (IB) in RS Pura.
The BSF and Rangers had also exchanged sweets on August 14.
There has been peace along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) with no major ceasefire violation reported for past quite some time. However, on the LoC, Pakistan army continues to aid and abet infiltration attempts by the militants. On the International Border, few intruders have been shot dead by the BSF while trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory.
In a related development, sweets were exchanged between the Indian Army and PLA troops in multiple border meeting points along the LAC on the occasion of India’s Independence Day.
Exchange of sweets between the two militaries on occasions like Independence Day and Republic Day has been a tradition for the last several years.
