*104 vehicles pressed into service across city: Mayor

SRINAGAR, June 27: Like the previous year, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has introduced a dedicated waste collection service to address the issue of improper disposal of Qurbani waste in Srinagar city.

Commissioner Athar Amir announced the initiative and urged residents not to mix sacrificial waste with regular municipal waste. The service, he said, will be available in all wards of the city and aims to ensure the proper collection of animal hides and other waste materials.
Speaking to media personnel at Dargah Hazratbal, Commissioner Athar Amir emphasized the importance of segregating Qurbani waste and shared details of the dedicated waste collection service.
Similar to the previous year, he said, the service will operate in two shifts and be available in every municipal ward. Commissioner stated, “People must not mix the wastage with the municipal waste, and in this regard, we have already provided information about the drivers, vehicles, contact numbers, and the details of ward officers.”
He further clarified that the waste collection service would be free of cost and accessible for two days, while urging residents to utilize the service and refrain from disposing of waste on roads and water bodies.
In case of any issues, he advised people to contact the ward team and, if needed, reach out to the control room for prompt assistance.
He informed that to ensure effective waste management during the Eid festival, SMC has assigned Joint Commissioner-level officers to oversee the dedicated waste collection service in different zones across the city, while assuring that measures are in place to guarantee the proper collection of sacrificial waste.
Meanwhile, in a press conference held during the day, Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu also deliberated on the initiative and said that collecting sacrificial waste in the city has been a challenge for which the necessary steps have been taken. He revealed that 104 vehicles have been deployed for the collection of ofals and animal hides.
Mayor also discussed the issue of drinking water shortage in the city and stated that he has requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to temporarily shut down the hydropower plant in Ganderbal. This, he said, will increase water flow and alleviate the suffering of the residents.
Regarding the ongoing works under the Srinagar Smart City project near Ghanta Ghar, Commissioner. He said that approximately 95% of the work has been completed.
