Jammu, July 12: A police officer was martyred and two cops were injured in a militant attack on a police party in Lal Bazar area of Srinagar this evening.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Vijay Kumar said here that three police personnel were injured in a militant attack in Lal Bazar area of Srinagar. He said that this was a small police naka which was regulating traffic as there was a huge rush of people due to Eid.
He added that police are scanning the CCTV footage to ascertain those involved in the attack. He said that they will be identified and neutralised soon.
A police spokesman said that at around 7 pm, militants fired indiscriminately upon a police naka party near GD Goenka Public School in Lal Bazar area of Srinagar in which one police personnel attained martyrdom and two other personnel got injured.
He said the preliminary investigation revealed that, militants fired upon a Naka party near G.D Goenka Public School area of Lal Bazar Srinagar, resulting in gunshot injuries to three personnel – ASI Mushtaq Ahmad, HC Fayaz Ahmad and SPO Abu Bakar. However, one injured ASI Mushtaq Ahmad succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom.
Meanwhile, both the injured police personnel have been shifted to hospital for the treatment of their injuries.
Police have registered a case under relevant Sections of law and initiated investigation. “Officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the terror crime while the whole area has been cordoned off with the help of reinforcement and search in the area is going on,” he said.
A wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Lines, Srinagar. Officers of Police, Central Armed Forces and civil administration led by ADGP Vijay Kumar laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyr for his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir P K Pole, DIG CKR Srinagar Sujit Kumar, DIG CRPF (North) Dr. R K Rana, SSP Srinagar Rakesh Balwal, Commandant 49th Bn CRPF, all Zonal SSPs and other officers & officials of police/security forces also paid rich floral tributes to the martyr.
In the meantime, police today said that militants managed to escape after brief gunfight in Reban, Zainapora area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
After the initial contact was established with the hiding militants, there was complete lull in firing from both sides.
The searches continued throughout night. However, no militant was found at the encounter. “It seems that due to darkness, militants believed to be two in number managed to escape,” an official said.
Security force today detected an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) like material in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
A police official said that security forces on a specific information recovered a gas cylinder fitted with fire crackers weighing 5 kgs which was planted at Litter Chowdribagh road to harm the security forces.
The suspicious cylinder was defused on spot. No injuries here reported.
