JAMMU, May 10: Former Minister and Member Parlia-ment from Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency, Madan Lal Sharma today said that Congress has always developed pro-poor policies and launched many flagship programmes like NRHM, MGNREGA, National Rural Drinking Water Mission etc which are benefiting the marginalized and poor.
Addressing a public gathering at Tope Sherkhanian including members of Ration Dealers Association today, the Congress MP criticized BJP for blocking Food Security Bill in the Parliament despite the initiatives and regular attempts by the Congress. He said that the proposed bill is the dream of the Congress president Sonia Gandhi as this bill is sure to ensure food security to the rural and urban poor.
The proposed bill aims at providing 7 kg of food grains per person per month to be given to priority category house holds which include rice, wheat etc. At least 3 kg of food grains per person per month are proposed to be given to general category house hold at price not exceeding 50% of minimum support price. The Bill also has the provision of the maternity benefit to the pregnant women and lactating mothers and meals for the special groups such as destitute, homeless persons, emergency/ disaster affected people and the people on verge of starvation.
Not only this, the bill also envisages unique features of food security allowances in case of non-supply of food grains and meals. Mr Sharma said that Congress was committed for the passage of this bill and will bring it again in the Parliament to defeat anti-poor designs of the BJP. He also asked the members of Ration Dealers Association to serve the people with dedication and commitment and said that Government has launched various schemes like AAY, BPL for the poor and real benefit should reach up to them. Director CAPD, Jammu G S Chib, Deputy Director and several other officers were also present on the occasion.
