KATHUA, Nov 22: The sleuths of Excise Department with the support of local police foiled a major attempt of smuggling polythene into the State by seizing 9000 kilograms of banned polythene bags from a truck at Toll Post Lakhanpur.
According to Deputy Excise Commissioner Toll Post Lakhnapur Vishesh Pal Mahajan, a truck bearing registration number JK01W-7143 reports at Toll Post Lakhanpur for clearance yesterday at around 6 pm carrying nut bolt consigned by M/s Sundaram Fasteners Limited to M/s Chenab Bridge Project undertaking Jammu.
However, when the vehicle was marked for physical checking, the driver tried to run away, but the vehicle was chased by the Excise Department team headed by Sajjad Sofi and Varinder Gupta ETOs, he said, adding that the local police was also requested to provide help and support who very promptly provided the assistance. The vehicle was stopped at Golden Gate near the Lakhnapur and the driver along with accomplices fled from the spot taking advantage of the darkness. The vehicle was brought to Toll Post and after being checked was found to be carrying 9000 kilograms of polythene covered with waste paper to dodge the checking teams, Mahajan informed.

He said that some local elements are active to support in smuggling of banned items in J&K, adding that the department has reported the matter to police to verify such elements.
The whole operation was supervised by the Deputy Excise Commissioner, Vishesh Mahajan and executed by the team of Excise Department comprising of Excise and Taxation Officers Dr Varinder Gupta, Sourabh Sharma, Showkat Hayat Mattoo, Sandeep Gupta; Inspector Khalid Manhas, Sub-Inspectors Kanwaljeet Shan and Tousif Sheikh and Excise Guards Nihal Singh and Mohammad Shakeel. The Excise team was supported by the police party headed by SHO Lakhanpur Inspector Kulbir Singh Choudhary.
