LEH, Oct 1: About 80 students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Leh landed in hospital due to alleged food poisoning.
According to the reports, after taking bread and butter in the breakfast yesterday, some students here at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya started complaining of headache, fever, vomiting and diarrhea and soon the number of affected students reached to 80.
The school authorities rushed all the ill students to at SNM Hospital, Leh, where two students, who were stated to be serious, were admitted in ICU ward while 50 students were discharged today after their condition improved.
Most of the affected children were girls of below 10th standard. Children from far-flung areas were worst affected, as their parents and relatives were not present to take care of them. One such student from Skayok Valley, Sonam Namgyal studying in class 8th said that they were served bread and butter for the breakfast and after that they got headache, fever and vomiting followed by loose motion. Most of the admitted students were below 10 standards.
Speaking to the media, Medical Superintendent, SNM Hospital, Dr P Wangchuk, said it seems to be case of food poisoning, as the children had started complaining of headache, fever, vomiting and loose motion after taking their morning meal.
Dr Wangchuk further said that children are responding to the treatment and out of the 80 admitted students, 30 have been discharged after successful treatment. “Even one of the students admitted in ICU is also doing well”, he said, adding, stool samples of few students have been taken for examination.
When contacted, Food Safety Officer, Gurmet Tamchos, said that after getting report from medical expert, they will take action. Meanwhile, a case FIR No 69/2016 under Sections 269/336 RPC has been lodged at police station Leh and investigation started.
