KARGIL, Dec 19: Seven-day workshop on Surna (Shehnai) and Daman, the traditional folk music of Ladakh, commenced today here at J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages -Kargil (JKAACL-K) under the guidance of Ali Ghulam, Skarma Dorjey and Tsering Angdus, experts in traditional folk music of Ladakh.
The inaugural session of the programme started with a scintillating musical show under the guidance of the experts. A large no of traditional musicians from different sectors of Kargil attended the workshop.
Aga Sayed Abass, Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil, was the chief guest while Urgan Lundup, Chief Executive Officer, Kargil Development Authority, was the guest of honour.
In his address, the Executive Councilor said that these kinds of workshops are the need of the hour for the promotion and development of a traditional Ladakhi music and assured to extend utmost support from Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, in future in this regard.
Earlier in his welcome speech, Nazir Hussain, Deputy Secretary/Special Officer for Culture, G1 said that the main purpose of the workshop is to promote and preserve traditional music —Surna (Shehnai) and Daman, which is intangible heritage of Ladakh. He also highlighted the importance and relevance of the workshop.
Among others present and spoke on the occasion were Shabir Hussain, Head Quarter Assistant to DC Kargil, Aga Sayed Towha, Assistant Director Tourism, Kargil, Gulzar Hussai Munshi, Executive Engineer REW Kargil.
Muhammad Abass presented vote of thanks while Tsewang Rigzin conducted the proceedings of the programme.
