JAMMU, Jan 31: As last day for withdrawal of nomination papers for elections to four seats of Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir ended today, all seven candidates stood in the fray.
“No nomination paper was withdrawn after the deadline expired at 3 pm today,’’ Returning Officer Mohammad Ramzan said.
He added that polling for all four seats will now be held from 10 am to 4 pm on February 7 while counting will start at 5 pm. The results will be declared on the same evening.
The seven candidates in the fray included Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad (Congress), Shamsher Singh and Chander Mohan Sharma (BJP), Mir Mohammad Fayaz and Nazir Ahmad Laway (PDP) and Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo and Nasir Aslam Wani (NC).
While victory of Shamsher Singh and Mir Mohammad Fayaz and defeat of Kitchloo and Wani were certain in the wake of PDP-BJP alliance, a keen contest is on cards among three candidates-Azad, Sharma and Laway for two seats.
