RANCHI, June 19: A local court today acquitted all the seven accused in connection with the killing of deputy superintendent of police U C Jha during a violent protest here 13 years ago.
The Additional Judicial Commissioner (IV), Manoj Prasad, acquitted the seven following lack of evidence against them, giving them benefit of doubt.
They were charged with murder of the DySP after the police officer had on December 28, 2000 suffered critical injuries in a mob attack and succumbed to the injuries three days later.
The violence broke out after a girl died under the wheels of a truck at Doranda in the city, sparking off protests and in the subsequent police firing three protesters had been killed.
Jha was attacked by the mob with rods and stones, leaving him seriously injured on the violent day before he succumbed to injuries.
Those who are acquitted in the case are; Mohammad Nausad, Mohammad Tabrej Alam, Sami Ahmed, Mohammad Saddique, Mohammad Zia-ud-din, Mohammad Makhsood and Mohammad Junaid.
The police produced 35 witnesses, including a magistrate, but the court found insufficient evidence against them. (PTI)
