RAJOURI, June 25: The police in Rajouri claimed to have registered 51 FIRs and booked 65 smugglers and rescued 268 bovine animals from their clutches in last one week.
The police also seized 27 vehicles, mostly light- holds carriers for being used in smuggling. During special drive against bovine smuggling which aims to keep a check on this unlawful practice, the police said, 51 bovines smuggling bids have been foiled across the district in last one week with 17 bids have been foiled under Rajouri Police Station alone. 268 animals being smuggled have been rescued during last one week with 104 animals have been rescued from clutches of smugglers in the jurisdiction of Rajouri police station, 48 in Thannamandi, three in Darhal, 20 in Nowshera, 18 in Kalakote, 40 in Dharamsal, 9 in Kandi, 15 in Budhal, 7 in Manjakote and 4 in Sunderbani.
Most of the bids have been foiled by police during surprise nakas laid at link roads in remote pockets while a around one dozen bids have been foiled in dense forests where smugglers were indulged in bovine smuggling by foot without use of any vehicle. Police further said that 65 people have been arrested in the action since last Sunday and action as per law of land has been taken against the accused while 27 vehicles, mostly light goods carrier, have been seized.
SSP Rajouri Amritpal Singh said that Jammu and Kashmir police in Rajouri district has a zero tolerance policy towards bovine smuggling as it is not only an unlawful act but is also inhumane as bovine animals are smuggled with cruelty. He said that in all the police stations and police posts in the district a special drive against bovine smuggling is going on with an aim to curb this crime. He said the highest number of attempts foiled by Rajouri Police Station led by SHO Rajouri Inspector Shoket Hussain under the supervisor of DySP Headquarters, Mudassir Hussain.
