NEW DELHI : A series of meetings have been convened here in the capital today in connection with the monsoon session of Parliament beginning tomorrow as also on the likelihood of BJP top brass and elected MPs of the NDA selecting their candidate for the coveted office of Vice-President of India.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has called a meeting of leaders of political parties in the House this evening at Parliament House.
During the meeting, Ms Mahajan will seek cooperation from the floor leaders of different parties in the Lok Sabha to ensure smooth transaction of business — which is expected to be stormy in view of situation in Jammu and Kashmir as also on issues concerning West Bengal, the GST implementation and also tension along the border with China.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar has also invited opposition leaders for a meeting to seek Opposition’s support for the smooth conduct of proceedings in both the Houses.
The Trinamool Congress has already announced that it would stay away from Parliamentary Affairs Minister’s meeting while attend the one convened by the Lok Sabha Speaker.
The NDA members of Parliament and union Ministers will meet in the evening to chalk out their strategy to counter opposition in Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to preside the meeting.
The BJP Parliamentary party executive is meeting separately. The BJP and NDA MPs may discuss the name of its Vice Presidential nominee as last date of filing nomination in July 18, Tuesday.
The united opposition has already decided to field Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former West Bengal Governor and a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, for the post. The voting for Presidential election will take place tomorrow.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament starting tomorrow – Monday- will continue till August 12.
In the last two days, the Government briefed opposition leaders in detail on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir as also on government’s handling of the border situation with China in the Sikkim sector.
